Our costume collection is filled with rich and sometimes unexpected stories, dating from the early colonial period right up to the present day.
Over the past couple of years, with the assistance of a Local History Grant from Public Record Office Victoria, we have been working to capture more of these stories, to make them available to discover on Victorian Collections and to preserve them for future generations with improved storage and documentation.
As part of the grant project, Annabel Butler and Laura Jocic have been digging deep into the collection, exploring the histories of different clothing items and what they can tell us about aspects of life in Brighton's - and Australia's - past. We are delighted to be able to share the fruits of their endeavours, with ten new Stories From Our Costume Collection.
From the goldfields of Bendigo to the suburban grocer's counter, from life under wartime clothing rationing to the opulence of Flinders Lane's most elite fashion houses, each of the objects featured in these stories reveals tantalising and surprising connections to our past and present. We invite you to explore them and to share your own stories and memories with us.

The presentation will be followed by afternoon tea, as well as an opportunity to view each of the ten items up close.

Things are getting busy at BHS over the next few months! Here are a few dates to mark in your calendars.
As part of the Australian Heritage Festival 2019, Bayside Library Service and Brighton Historical Society invite you to attend a talk by Julie Spring about her research journey through family history and the story of a fascinating Brighton figure.
After a refreshing summer break, BHS is back!
You can visit us in our rooms every Thursday from midday until 5pm, or at other times by appointment. Visitors are always welcome, whether you need a hand researching your family or house's history, wish to carry out your own research using our extensive records, have a burning question about the local area or just feel like browsing our displays. Our friendly volunteers are always happy to help (pop in around 3:30 and you might even score some afternoon tea!).

Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Sunday 9th September at 2:00pm.
The President's and Treasurer's Reports and the election of the Committee will be followed by a presentation and a presentation and talk by Deborah Tout-Smith from Museums Victoria.
Deborah has been a museum curator for over 30 years and has worked in the Humanities Department of Museums Victoria since 2002. She has curated several major exhibitions at Melbourne Museum, including WWI: Love & Sorrow (2014) and Melbourne Story (2008, with Liza Dale-Hallett). Her talk will take us behind the scenes at the museum and discuss her work on early Brighton.
The talk will be followed by a Silver Service afternoon tea.
