BHS has a photograph collection spanning many years and covering a variety of subjects including houses, buildings such as churches, schools and hotels, people and family collections, sports teams, bands, the foreshore and aviation to name but a few.
Our hard-copy photographs are grouped in categories and stored in a filing cabinet but increasingly we are scanning photographs brought into the BHS and adding them to our image data base.
BHS volunteers remain active in their efforts to photograph Brighton, particularly older houses before they are demolished. A current project titled, ‘This Shop Now – What Shop Then?’ is the photographing of local businesses in Church, Bay and Martin Streets in an effort to gather information on the history of businesses in the area.
The BHS loves to receive photographs of old Brighton, preferably accompanied by information.
Some wonderful photographs of early Brighton are displayed on our walls for your education and enjoyment, come and view our collection of past local sporting heroes, you may even discover an ancestor of yours.
